The story
One leave record, every province's rules
A Canadian employer with staff in more than one province is running more than one set of vacation, statutory holiday and leave rules at the same time. Vacation pay is a percentage of gross wages set provincially, not a fixed number of days, and it generally accrues on overtime and commissions as well as base pay. Statutory holiday pay is usually an averaging calculation rather than a flat day's wage, and the list of recognized holidays differs by province. Ontario recognizes nine public holidays under its Employment Standards Act.
Workzoom's time-off module configures leave types, accrual rules and carry-over limits once per policy, so a multi-province employer is not rebuilding the rules for every location. Balances and accruals update automatically, and the payroll engine applies the correct provincial calculation when leave reaches a pay run.
The story
Parental and maternity leave, tracked against the record HR already has
Federal Employment Insurance funds income replacement during parental leave, separate from the provincial job-protected leave an employee is entitled to take. In 2026, EI combines 15 weeks of maternity benefit with either 35 weeks of standard parental benefit or 61 weeks of extended parental benefit, for 50 or 76 weeks combined. Workzoom does not process the EI claim itself; the employee applies directly through Service Canada.
What Workzoom does is keep the leave dates, leave type and return date on the same employee record HR and payroll already use. When a request for parental leave is approved, the schedule, timekeeping and payroll modules see the same dates without a second entry, and the balance an employee sees matches what their manager sees.
The story
From request to payroll, without a spreadsheet in between
Time-off requests are among the highest-volume HR transactions in most organizations. Silvera for Seniors, a Calgary senior-care organization with 400 employees across 36 buildings, ran leave management through paper forms before moving to Workzoom. Leave-balance questions had been its highest category of HR inquiries. After the switch, employees check their own balance and submit requests through self-service, and Workzoom's Canadian payroll engine handles CPP, EI and CRA T4 reporting on the same platform.
Silvera's result is a published customer outcome, not a guaranteed saving for every organization. Evaluate the leave types, accrual rules and approval chain that match your own policy before treating any customer's result as a benchmark.
