The short answer
Human Capital Management (HCM) is the umbrella term for software that runs the full employee lifecycle: hiring, onboarding, payroll, scheduling, performance, learning, and offboarding. HCM is broader than HRIS because it includes strategic talent and workforce planning. Workzoom is an all-in-one HCM for mid-market organizations from 50 to 5,000 employees.
How HCM works.
HCM describes the full employment lifecycle from requisition through exit, including recruiting, onboarding, performance, learning, and succession, layered on top of core HR data. The distinction from an HRIS is scope rather than technology: the HRIS is the record, HCM is the record plus the processes acting on it. Buyers usually meet the term when a vendor bundles talent modules onto a core platform.
Where HCM goes wrong.
- Buying HCM breadth that never gets configured, so the organization pays for talent modules that stay switched off.
- Assuming HCM implies a single database. Many suites are acquired products sharing a login, not a record.
- Evaluating on module count rather than on whether those modules read from the same employee record.
Where HCM sits between HR and payroll.
HCM does not stand alone. The concepts most often paired with it on a HR run are HRIS, Talent management, Workforce management. Each is defined elsewhere in this glossary so you can trace the full chain without leaving the site.
