The short answer

Gross-to-net is the full payroll calculation that turns gross earnings into the amount an employee takes home, applying every statutory deduction, benefit contribution, garnishment, and employer-side cost in the correct order. Running gross-to-net means a system computes the whole sequence, not only a pay total. Workzoom runs full gross-to-net payroll in Canada, the United States, and the Bahamas.

How Gross-to-Net works.

Order matters more than arithmetic. Pre-tax deductions reduce taxable earnings before income tax is calculated, post-tax deductions come out after, and statutory contributions each have their own base and ceiling. Get the sequence wrong and every downstream number is wrong with it. A gross-to-net engine also has to distinguish employee-side deductions from employer-side costs, since only the former change net pay while both affect what the business spends. Systems that stop at gross calculation leave the rest to a separate tool or a spreadsheet.

Questions about Gross-to-Net

Gross-to-net is the complete calculation from gross earnings to net pay, applying pre-tax deductions, statutory contributions, income tax, post-tax deductions, and garnishments in the correct sequence, alongside the employer-side costs that do not affect net pay.
Zero-to-gross calculates earnings up to the gross figure and stops. Gross-to-net continues through every deduction to the amount the employee takes home. The statutory calculation is the harder half, so the distinction matters when comparing systems.
