How Benefits administration works.

Benefits administration covers plan setup, eligibility rules, enrollment, life-event changes, and the deduction amounts that flow into each pay run. The difficulty is that eligibility depends on data changing independently of benefits: hours worked, employment status, dependants, and waiting periods. Every change also has to reach the carrier, typically through a portal update or a call to the broker, on the same cycle as the payroll deduction, or coverage and deduction quietly diverge.

  1. The most common failure is reconciling carrier invoices by hand every month, because enrollment changes reach the carrier on a different schedule than they reach payroll.
